Sauna culture is an integral part of the lives of the majority of the Finnish population. Traditionally the sauna has been considered a sacred space – 'a church of nature'. It is a place not only to wash one’s body, but also cleanse the mind and embrace a sense of inner peace. There are a variety of forms and approaches in sauna culture, with none taking precedence over another. Traditions are transmitted through families and can be practiced in private homes or public places.
