A Small Monument of Harju
"Harjun pieni monumentti" (A Small Monument of Harju) is, true to its name, a small yet significant work about the red brick building rising next to Dallapé Park in Vallila, Helsinki. Its layered history — from mortuary to youth centre — is examined as a paused moment through photographs, alongside an essay by art historian Riitta Nikula, shedding light on the building's past and cultural significance.
The book received an honorary mention as one of the most beautiful books of the year 2025 in the category of Experimental and Limited Edition.
"A large format for a small building. The generous page size does full justice to Hellsten's accomplished photographs: the viewer steps into the world of the images and begins to see anew a building they may have passed countless times before. The poetic images and the dreaminess of the transparent paper are sharpened by the bold typography and layout."
